Ivy Lee Register

Ivy Lee Register was born nearly 127 years ago on March 12th, 1893 in Dover, Florida to his Father Ivy Register and Mother, Laura Virginia Burnett.

• On January 17th, 1893 Hawaiian-born lawyer, politician, and businessman Lorrin A. Thurston in conjunction with the Citizen's Committee of Public Safety in Hawaii, with the intervention of the United States Marine Corps overthrow the government of Queen Liliuokalani.

• On February 1st, 1893 Thomas Edison finishes construction of the first ever motion picture studio in West Orange, New Jersey.

Ivy was the third of five children born to his Mother and Father. He had two older Sisters ( Olive Mabel & Lula Macy ) and two younger Sisters ( May and Inez Sankey Register )

** This was the second marriage for his Father Ivy who had previously married 15 year old Martha Jane "Mattie" Alderman. After three children and 4 years of marriage, Mary Jane passes away at the age of 19 on December 30th, 1884.

Register Patriarch Ivy supports his family in the field of farming before becoming the Hillsborough County surveyor and later the County tax assessor.

** Ivy Lee's Grandfather, Reubin Register served with the Confederate States Army during the American Civil War. He dies at just 32 years of age from the effects of thyroid disease in a CSA military hospital @ Charleston, South Carolina on September 14th, 1863.

As a young man, Ivy Lee like his Father partakes in farming as a way to support himself.

On August 15th, 1918 Ivy Lee's Father would pass away at the age of sixty.

Three weeks later, on September 5th, 1918 Ivy Lee (25) enlists with the United States Army and is sent to Camp Wheeler in Macon, Georgia for training during the First World War. He honorably serves his Country until March 5th 1919 after the "Great Wars" conclusion.

In June of 1919, Ivy Lee is confronted by county traffic officers and charged with "Not dimming his lights" . The case actually went to trial, Mr. Register defended himself and despite both deputies testifying against him, he was found not guilty !! ( Article in comments )

Ivy Lee would begin a lifelong career with the United States postal service as a letter carrier after leaving the military.

On February 2nd, 1930 Mr. Register is married when he weds Georgia native Sally Elizabeth Busby. The marriage did not produce any children and ultimately ends in divorce 11 years later in 1941. ( Sally Elizabeth would remarry later that same year on December the 15th, 1941 )

On September 2nd, 1956 Ivy Lee would lose his Mother Laura Virginia Burnett Register. She was 87.

** Ivy Lee never remarries and lives a quiet life from this point forward.

Later in life, Ivy Lee would relocate to Cherryvile, North Carolina where he continues to work with the United States post office in his final years.

He would pass away at Cleveland Memorial hospital in Shelby, North Carolina at the age of 72 on August 1st, 1965 after a long battle with heart disease.
