Julian Clyde was the fifth of six children born to his Mother and Father. Chronologically his elder siblings were James elmer, Jesse, .Mae Lily, .and Verma Pearl. dditionally he had a single younger Brother by the name of David Ollie Pheil who was born in September of 1925
Pheil Patriarch William Henry supports his family as a grocery merchant and was later engaged in "Public Hauling"
Julian's parents eventually divorce and both his Mother and Father would soon remarry. By 1940 this evening's honoree at the age of 16 is living with his Mother and Stepfather, William Carter in Brevard County, Florida. According to Census records Julian' attended primary school through grade six.
On February 24th, 1943 just six weeks before beginning his military training, Julian Clyde marries 16-year-old Elizabeth Stanley in Tampa, Florida.
After having turned 18, young Mr Pheil registers to serve his country during the Second World War on April 5th, 1943..By this time his family has relocated to the Gulf Coast of Florida and City of Tampa. Upon registration Julian Clyde, is employed by the "Tampa Ship Building Company" as a "Leaderman"
He is sent to Camp Wheeler in Macon Georgia and trains with his assigned military branch, the United States Army for the next five months until October of 1943. When their training was complete, Julian Clyde and the 15th infantry, Third Infantry Division set sail from Norfolk, Virginia en route to French Morocco in Africa. ( Audie Murphy one of the most decorated and famous United States Army soldiers during the Second World War also served in the 15th Infantry. ).
** The 3rd Infantry Division had 38 Medal of Honor recipients the most of any division. This heroism came at a high cost; as the division lost 4,922 men who were killed in action and 636 that died of wounds. These were the highest losses of any division.
** The 15th Regiment also suffered greatly as 1,633 soldiers were killed in action and 419 listed as missing in action.
The 15th was .sent to Anzio, Italy and were integral in the coastal landing on January 22nd 1944.. They took the Germans by surprise having landed 40,000 troops and 5,000 vehicles. Sorrowfully, just 10 days into this 5 month campaign this evening's honoree, Julian Clyde Pheil is killed along the shores of Italy on Tuesday February 1st, 1944
