☆ Interesting events that occurred in Mr Bass's birth year of 1898 included...

▪ On January 1st 1898 New York City annexes land from surrounding counties, creating the City of Greater New York. The city is geographically divided into 5 boroughs....Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, The Bronx, and Staten Island.

▪ On February 15th 1898,,The USS Maine explodes and sinks in Havana harbor, Cuba, killing 266 men. Popular opinion blames Spain and helps precipitate the Spanish–American War. On March 28th after an investigation, the U.S. Navy publicly concludes that the USS Maine was sunk by a mine, further pushing sentiment towards war.

▪ On April 20th, President William McKinley signs a Joint Resolution with Cuba and a declaration of War against Spain, beginning the Spanish–American War. The declaration ia accepted five days later.

▪ On July 1st, The Battle of San Juan Hill begins... American forces capture the San Juan Heights near Santiago de Cuba. Theodore Roosevelt memorably leads the charge of the Rough Riders. This battle included the 24th and 25th Colored Infantry !! ( Depiction in comments below )

▪ On December 10th 1898, The Treaty of Paris is signed, ending the Spanish–American War...


Leslie served the United States Army for the state of Virginia as Private during the First World War… He stood 5ft. 11 inches tall and weighed 171 pounds…

After the war, Leslie moved back home and supported his mother by working as a Porter at a grocery store while his brother worked as a Driver in the Fish Wagon Industry…

Eventually, Mr. Bass moved from Alabama to Hillsborough County, Florida…

Leslie U. Bass passed away on May 1st 1972…
